Tijuana, capital of craft beer

Tijuana, BC. The Tourism and Conventions Committee (Cotuco) of Tijuana and the Association of Brewers of the Baja signed a biannual collaboration agreement, in which the municipal agency will support that sector by projecting them from the tourism landscape, and managing resources for their benefit.

The president of the committee, Francisco Villegas Peralta, said that there are currently more than 400 labels of craft beer in the city, which led to the signing of the agreement with the president of the association, Raúl Aispuro Funes.

He explained that the city has diversified the mechanisms to generate this input, which has opened the interest of tourists from various parts of the world, who attend establishments to taste drinks, generating economic spillover in support of the inhabitants of the town.

According to the Secretary of Tourism of the state, both the production and the profits generated by craft beer began to double since 2015 in Baja California.

In 2015, the entity had 53 breweries; for 2016, it rebounded 64%, since the year closed with 87 businesses of this turn.

In addition, the same statistics indicate that, like the number of breweries, they also increased the manufacturing of the product, as well as the profits during those two years; for example, while in 2015 the production was 30,300 hectoliters, in 2016 they reached 51,000.

The upward trend occurred the same for earnings, as they increased more than double, with 409 million pesos, respectively, between 2015 and 2016, while for 2017 the figures remained the same as their previous year and for this 2018 is projected to exceed the production of 51,000 hectoliters.
Meeting

Last May, craft breweries in Tijuana met with merchants in California and the United States, to work on a project that will promote local beer across the border to expand their market.

The National City Chamber of Commerce held an event in that month, which local businessmen went to find out about the provisions that exist in the American Union so that Mexican companies can place their product.
